On the whole, PC gaming is typically a Windows-only affair. Both Mac and Linux users have had a significantly more limited selection of games to choose from and also a more limited hardware selection too.

Thankfully things have started to shift away from this Windows-centric affair, as we have seen mega-gaming service Steam officially support Linux and add compatibility for over 100 games including popular titles like Left for Dead 2 and Portal. While Linux never managed to catch on in the mainstream, flavors like the Ubuntu Linux that comes with the Alienware X51 are easy to use, fully-featured, and of course save you from paying the Windows tax on a computer.

Dell and its extraterrestrial Alienware division have been one of the more Linux-friendly PC makers, but their efforts were mostly limited to low-end laptops. This new flavor of the X51 mini PC marks their latest expansion of Linux offerings and represents a cool new option for those who want to ditch Microsoft.

The X51 is a small form factor PC, sized at just about 12.5-inches square with a sloping profile that gives this machine the size and looks of a game console or set-top box. Accordingly it will fit right in amongst the other home theater components in your living room, with the capabilities to just about replace your PC, cable box, and game console with this one box. Auralux Game on Android updated with support for all devices

Games these days are full of HD graphics, explosions, and lately lots of zombies but today we have some excellent news about something completely different. Back in July last year we reviewed an awesome and extremely relaxing and addicting game called Auralux, but it was limited to Tegra 3 devices only. The game is full of calming ambient sounds and offers an abstract, simplified real-time strategy experience. It’s worth checking out so read on past the break.

There really is no way to describe how awesome and relaxing this game is, you just have to try it for yourself. Back in July they launched for Tegra 3 devices only, and sadly it has taken them nearly an entire year to bring this to all Android devices. Today Auralux was updated with support for all Android devices, and it’s excellent news.

Their listing in the play store mentions it being a work of art, and not just a game, and uses words like abstract, essentialized, and simplified when explaining the gameplay. It’s simple. Use strategy to take over other worlds in this game, all to a calming tone and sounds as you battle other waves of enemies. It’s simple, minimalistic in design, and surprisingly loads of fun. I’m not sure if it’s how simple the game is, the neat little sound effects, or simply the fact that you really have to try multiple different approaches to win each level. It truly is an work of art blend into a real-time strategy game. You’ve seen it on PC, and now it’s available for all Android devices and even has a new map pack. The game is completely free, and you can purchase more maps should you choose.

Acer updates Aspire range of notebooks, including new V7 Ultrabook

Acer has updated its range of Aspire V series notebooks with new V5 models that come in various configurations and also introduced its new V7 series Ultrabook range.

The V7 series Ultrabooks, described as thin and stylish and sporting a “silky touch” finish on the bottom will come in screens sizes of 14″ and 15.6″, with screen resolution options of 1366×768 and full HD 1920×1080. Other options are expected to include a choice of 3rd generation Intel CPU’s, SSD’s, and WiDi. Acer’s new Converter Port will also be included. Specific details are not provided by Acer but with its lower numbered brethren sporting Dolby Home Theatre and NVIDIA’s GeForce GT7XXM series or AMD’s Radeon HD8750 its possible these options could be available on the V7 range.

The new Aspire V7 series Ultrabooks are expected to go on sale at the end of May with prices starting at $ 599.

Microsoft’s SkyDrive now has 250 million users

Amidst its publishing of its interview with Tami Reller earlier today, Microsoft has also made an announcement: a new milestone for SkyDrive, which as exceeded the 250 million user mark. Says the company, its cloud storage service saw a jump of 50 million users following the release of Windows 8, which also recently achieved its own milestone, exceeding 100 million licenses sold.

Microsoft goes on to wax poetic about its appreciation for its users, of which there are about 700 million with Microsoft accounts. Back in August, SkyDrive received a design change and some new features, such as a Recycle Bin, improved uploading, and the ability to chat with Facebook friends. During the same month, Microsoft also rolled out SkyDrive for Android.

A short while later, December saw SkyDrive hit the Xbox 360, allowing users to browse their files without leaving the gaming station, along with a promise that over 40 apps would be showing up for the gaming console by this spring. And finally, a couple months ago March saw a billion documents from Office uploaded to the cloud service, as well as integrated with the new MS Office.

Microsoft is looking towards the future now, it says, one in which it hopes to garner one billion users on its service. More features are promised for a future date, though what those features are aren’t specified. Back in January, CEO Ballmer talked about the service, saying that its competitors aren’t of any concern. You can check out some of the other recent happenings with SkyDrive here.

Earth is being cooled by pollutants, says researchers

We’ve heard quite a bit on the climate-change effects of pollution, but much of it has centered on increased global temperatures, resulting in reduced ice caps and particularly volatile storms that have ravaged many places around the world in the last decade. Now a new study has shown that pollutants can also have a cooling effect on our planet via their effects on clouds.

Clouds can have both a warming and a cooling effect on our planet, depending on their formation. Condensed water droplets are the substance of clouds, with the size of the particles upon which they are suspended being directly related to the brightness of clouds as determined from above. Obviously, the brighter a cloud, the more sunlight it reflects away from our blue marble, something that has been widely known.

In this study, the effects of pollution on clouds was looked at, in particular the effects of organic compounds released by pollutants, which make their way upwards and serve as particles. Because of their nature, the pollutant particles cause larger droplets to form, and the result is brighter clouds, which in turn reflect more sunlight. Says the researchers, though, the effects aren’t likely powerful enough to combat increasing global temperatures.

Said the project’s author Gordon McFiggans: “More cloud droplets lead to brighter cloud when viewed from above, reflecting more incoming sunlight. We did some calculations of the effects on climate and found that the cooling effect on global climate of the increase in cloud seed effectiveness is at least as great as the previously found entire uncertainty in the effect of pollution on clouds.”

Adobe updates Creative Cloud with exclusive tools for Photoshop CC

Adobe has announced updates across its lineup of Creative Cloud software. And, making the clearest distinction yet between its offerings for subscription versus ‘perpetual’ users, the updated software programs have all been rebranded with the appendage ‘CC’. As with its previous Creative Cloud update, Adobe is not commenting on when or even if these updates will be made available to users who bought Photoshop CS6. Here’s what’s new for Creative Cloud members using Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop CC’s headline feature is the Camera Shake Reduction tool that arrives as demoed earlier this year. This new tool has generated much attention because it seeks to correct specifically for image blur caused by unwanted camera movement, a virtual image stabilization, if you will.

Photoshop CC users can now access Camera Raw from the filters menu and apply the results to any layer. Making Camera Raw directly available eliminates the more cumbersome workflow in which users had to first open a Raw file as a Smart Object in order to adjust the changes to that layer without starting from scratch. And because it’s a Filter, you can now apply Camera Raw’s collection of tools to vector and video layers. Of course you can still open a file directly in Camera Raw as before. This latest version of Camera Raw also includes features introduced in the Lightroom 5 Beta, such as Upright, and the Radial Gradient.

Photoshop CC users who load the software on more than one computer – a desktop and laptop, for example – now gain the time-saving ability to sync their current Photoshop preferences across multiple devices. New upsampling algorithms that promise greater suppression of edge halos when resampling have been added to the Image Size menu. And Photoshop CC now includes all of the 3D and image analysis functionality that was previously exclusive to Photoshop Extended versions.
