LG says the Optimus Vu will hit the US this quarter
While none of the carriers inside the U.S. have stepped forward, LG has mentioned which the Optimus Vu (go look at our review) is destined for the United States marketplace this quarter. This aligns very effectively with all the reports of the Verizon branded version, sporting Big Red’s LTE radio bands plus it’s distinctive 4:3 aspect ratio. With the limited launch (mainly limited to Asian markets) the Vu hasn’t prepared a immense splash inside the Android pool. Dropping the Ice Cream Sandwich running 5-incher with digitized pen input found on the Verizon network might change all which. Naturally simply because it’s been watched plus said doesn’t create it thus (hi there, Verizon Nexus One!) thus till you see it about certain shop shelves you nonetheless need to call it a bit of the rumor. Hopefully, LG may drive the Vu into the U.S. marketplace, because more options is usually much [...]

And almost 12 million iPads to boot Apple has announced its latest financial results for the fiscal second quarter, which ended on March 31st. CN: Another strong quarter for AT&T as revenue, profits climb
AT&T marked a strong first quarter with smartphones leading the way, the company announced today. During the three-month period ended March 31, AT&T generated $ 31.8 billion in revenue, representing a gain of $ 575 million, or 1.8 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2011. In addition, AT&T posted a profit of $ 3.6 billion, or 60 cents per share, in the period, up from the $ 3.4 billion it generated in the first quarter of 2011. Analysts were predicting 57 cents per share for the latest quarter. A key revenue driver for the company was smartphone sales, which hit their highest first-quarter point ever. According to AT&T, it sold 5.5 million smartphones last quarter, and those advanced devices accounted for 78 percent of all postpaid device sales. By the end of the quarter, 59.3 percent of AT&T’s wireless subscribers were on smartphones, up from 46.2 percent last year. [...]
CN: Microsoft turns in a strong quarter
Last updated at 2:01 p.m. PT. Microsoft delivered a strong fiscal third quarter as the software company’s enterprise lineup — SQL Server, System Center and products like Lync and Dynamics CRM — carried the team. The company reported third-quarter earnings of $ 5.11 billion, or 60 cents a share, on revenue of $ 17.41 billion. Wall Street was expecting Microsoft to report earnings of 57 cents a share on revenue of $ 17.18 billion. As for the outlook, Microsoft said it is cutting its operating expense guidance. Overall, the quarter played out about the way analysts projected — Microsoft’s business tools carried the quarter. Microsoft’s server and tools unit saw revenue jump 14 percent from a year ago to $ 4.57 billion. SQL Server revenue was up double digits and System Center sales surged 20 percent. Operating income for the servers and tools unit was $ 1.74 billion. Microsoft’s business [...]

CN: Microsoft’s weakest link in 3rd quarter: Xbox and phone division
Microsoft’s third-quarter earnings for its fiscal 2012 year are in, and most of the stories I’m reading are focusing on the strong Windows client performance — compared to the year-ago quarter. Fewer stories are focused on the not-so-great quarter turned in by Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices unit, which is home of the Xbox and Windows Phone (and where the Skype division’s numbers are reported). First, a bit of context on both counts. Yes, the Windows division’s performance was better in the third quarter of fiscal 2012 — an impressive feat given the ongoing concerns about the growth and viability of the PC market. But Windows/Windows Live revenues ($ 4.62 billion) were down compared to those from the second quarter of this fiscal year ($ 4.74 billion). Regarding the Entertainment and Devices unit’s performance, some will be quick to claim it must be Windows Phone dragging down the rest of the [...]

CN: Analyst: Apple sold 33 million iPhones last quarter
Apple might have sold more than 30 million iPhones during the first quarter, according to an analyst. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote to investors today that Apple likely sold 33 million iPhones during the first quarter. During the same period in 2011, Apple sold 18.65 million iPhones. Although Munster’s estimate easily outpaces that quarter, the figure would be far behind the 37 million iPhones Apple sold during the fourth quarter. Munster didn’t address the difference, but fourth-quarter’s sales figures were likely higher due to the debut of the iPhone 4s and holiday shopping. In addition, Munster said that Apple likely sold 12 million iPads worldwide during the first quarter. Apple sold 4.69 million iPads during the first quarter of 2011. Munster’s note comes a little over a week after J.P. Morgan offered up its predictions on iPhone and iPad sales during the first quarter. That research firm said Apple’s [...]
Groupon earnings disappoint in first public quarter
Groupon offers disappointing earnings in its first quarter as a public company, but where is Groupon Now? Shares of Groupon, the most popular daily deal site on the Web and once touted as “the fastest growing company ever,” fell over 15 percent yesterday on news of a net loss of two cents per share on revenues of $ 506 million. Revenues increased 194 percent from a year ago, essentially meaning that Groupon made much more money than it did last year, but also spent significantly more to achieve those gains. This follows Sprint’s announcement of a similar profit loss on increased revenues, perhaps a sign that it takes money to make money in tech these days. “Groupon had a strong fourth quarter and we finished 2011 having helped 250,000 local merchants across 47 countries grow their businesses while saving Groupon customers billions of dollars,” said Andrew Mason, Groupon’s founder and [...]

Apple posts record sales last quarter
If you’re curious about how Apple has been doing since the loss of Steve Jobs, it looks like the company has nothing to worry about. Yesterday, Apple announced its financial results for its fiscal 2012 first quarter which ended December 31st 2011. According to the report, the company posted record quarterly revenue of $ 46.33 billion and record quarterly net profit of $ 13.06 billion. Compared to its revenue of $ 26.74 billion and quarterly net profit of $ 6 billion one year ago, that’s one massive increment.Apple reportedly sold 37.04 million iPhones in the quarter alone – a 128% unit growth over the year-ago quarter, while it sold 15.43 million iPads in the same period, a 111% increase over the year-ago quarter as well. Apple also sold 5.2 million Macs (26% unit increase over the year-ago quarter) and 15.4 million iPods (21% decline from the year-ago quarter). It looks [...]
Verizon shipped 4.2 million iPhones last quarter
During an event in SF, Verizon’s Chief Financial Officer, Fran Shammo, revealed that the company had sold 4.2 million iPhones during the holiday quarter, reports Bloomberg. That number is more than double the 2 million iPhones the company sold in the previous quarter, when it was lagging behind AT&T, and also surpasses AT&T’s all-time high of 4.1 million iPhones sold. The holiday shopping season, demand for the iPhone 4S, and price cuts on the iPhone 4 likely contributed to the hike in sales. But whether it shows Verizon gaining iPhone shares is uncertain since AT&T, C Spire, and Sprint have yet to reveal their iPhone sales numbers, although Sprint has suggested its sales to be strong. This is looking good for Apple, which will be reporting its earnings for the fall quarter of 2011 on January 24. Analysts expect the company to reveal exceptional iPhone sales numbers, with some estimates [...]
