Small OTA Update (Build 9.4.3.29) Rolling Out Now To The ASUS Transformer Pad 300, Brings Face Unlock And Considerable Performance Improvements

Looks like an OTA update started making its way to the ASUS Transformer Pad 300 over the weekend that brings a handful of enhancements to the device, including Face Unlock, battery usage details (finally!), and a considerable boost in performance. What do I mean by “considerable boost in performance,” exactly? To put it mildly, the TF300 had a bit of… lag when too many things were running at one time, but it suffered the worst hit when app updates were installing from the Play Store. Now, that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, the tablet seems to be quite a bit snappier overall, which is definitely a good thing. Here’s to hoping that ASUS brings this update to the TF201 (Prime) so it can see the same (much needed) performance boost.    Also included in the update is Battery Usage Details, so you can finally figure out what’s [...]

Asus Transformer Prime to Get Ethernet Support, Face Unlock, and More

Asus Transformer PrimeThe Asus Transformer Prime is getting a new firmware update to make the popular Android tablet even more versatile and laptop-like. The update, announced on the company’s Italian Facebook page, will start arriving on March 29 and will include networking improvements, such as an option to hook the tablet up to a wired network via an ethernet cable. The 9.4.2.21 software update will start rolling out over the air, but to get the wired ethernet networking functionality, Transformer owners will need to buy a USB-to-ethernet cable adapter. The adapter will likely be a small investment, however, with a big payoff: faster and more secure connectivity for your hybrid tablet. In addition to the ethernet support, ad-hoc wireless networking will also be provided in the new firmware. This means the Transformer will be able to connect to other wireless devices directly, without having to go through a router or [...]

Transformer Prime gets Ubuntu with bootloader unlock release

ASUS has released the bootloader unlock tool for the Eee Pad Transformer Prime this morning, and developers have wasted no time in opening up the Tegra 3 tablet to Ubuntu. Prime owner littlesteve had a Ubuntu build prepped and waiting for just this day, though there are still some hardware issues to iron out: no touchscreen support, for instance, so that a Bluetooth mouse is necessary for navigation. The Prime currently ships with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, having been upgraded to the OS earlier in the year, but ASUS opted to lock down the bootloader in what it said was a move to ensure device stability and protect content-owner DRM. That unsurprisingly didn’t go down well with the developer community, and ASUS was forced to backtrack and promise [...]
