Amtrak now using iPhone to scan tickets

I’ve only ridden a few trains in my day, and the conductors always come through and punched the tickets using a hole punch to show that they’ve been used. I’m not sure if that’s how Amtrak has always done it, but whatever method the train ticket punchers have been using is being replaced with the Apple iPhone. The iPhone is going to be used to scan tickets. New York Times reports that conductors have been training using the device since November on some routes. The routes where the ticket scanners have been used include Boston to Portland and San Jose to Sacramento. By the end of the summer, 1700 conductors across the country will be using the iPhone to scan tickets. The new system will allow riders to print tickets or load a barcode on their smartphone for the conductors to scan using their own iPhone. That means passengers will [...]

Apple Begins Rejecting Apps for Using the Unique Device Identifier (UDID)

TechCrunch reports that Apple has begun rejecting iOS apps for the use of a unique device identifier known as the UDID. The site notes that several developers have reported rejections for the use of the UDID in the past week, and Apple is said to be ramping up the enforcement of this policy over the next few weeks. As the name suggests, the UDID is a unique identifier for every iOS device. It’s tied specifically to the hardware and can’t be changed by the user. Apple had previously warned developers with the introduction of iOS 5 that the use of the UDID was deprecated and would be phased out. The sudden rejections, however, have caught some developers off guard: “Everyone’s scrambling to get something into place,” said Victor Rubba, chief executive of Fluik, a Canadian developer that makes games like Office Jerk and Plumber Crack. “We’re trying to be proactive [...]

Study: As more teens own smartphones, less are actually using them to make calls

More young adults are beginning to own smartphones and replacing calls and face-to-face interactions with texting. Will phone calls soon become obsolete? There’s a reason the typical image of a 21st century teen seem to revolve around a self-centered young adult clicking away on their cellphones and off in their own world. A study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project states that more teens are starting to own smartphones than ever, yet the rate of phone calls have significantly fallen. In 2009, 30 percent of teens talk to their friends on a landline. This number has dropped down to 14 percent, with landline phones starting to disappear from most homes and replaced by individual cellphone plans. Just 26 percent of teens use their cellphones to make calls, a fall from 2009′s 38 percent. Instead of calling each other, teens have bumped their daily texting count from 50 to 60 [...]

Google to refresh engine using “semantic search”

Focusing on more natural answers for search queries Google is the massively dominant search engine of today – and while the Mountain View company may appear to be busy putting fingers in every tech pie imaginable, the firm isn’t neglecting its core business. The news has emerged that the search engine will be further developed with something called “semantic search” technology, reports the Wall Street Journal. This will be blended with its existing algorithms and keyword search process, and is designed to deliver results in a different, more natural form. Instead of just spewing out pages of links at the user, search results will be more relevant by context, and direct answers will be provided by Google in some cases. The WSJ cites the example of searching for “Lake Tahoe”. At the moment, that will return a basic link to the Wiki page, map and bureau visitor centre as the [...]

Flashback Malware Authors Using Twitter to Talk to Infected Machines [Mac Blog]

We’ve been following for some time the story of the Flashback trojan that has been targeting Mac users by masquerading as a Flash Player installer but which has also been evolving to include increasingly sophisticated tactics for infecting users’ computers. Antivirus firm Intego now reports that Flashback’s creators are using an interesting new tactic for communicating with machines infected by the trojan: Twitter. According to the report, Flashback is programmed to search Twitter for Tweets containing a unique 12-digit code that changes daily, with the malware’s authors being able to issue commands to infected computers by posting from any number of Twitter accounts simply by including the appropriate code as a hashtag. These hashtags aren’t as simple as, say, #Flashback or #MacMalwareMaster, but are seemingly random strings of characters that change each day. Intego’s malware research team cracked the 128-bit RC4 encryption used for Flashback’s code and discovered the keys [...]

Paralysed woman to walk London Marathon using robotic exoskeleton

A British woman who was paralysed in an accident five years ago is planning to use a robotic exoskeleton to help her complete the London marathon in April. Claire Lomas, who will be raising money for charity by taking part, thinks it may take her up to three weeks to finish. Paralysed in a horse-riding accident in 2007, Claire Lomas was told by doctors that she would never walk again. But thanks to a special robotic suit, the 31-year-old Brit is now back on her feet. Lomas, who has been wheelchair-bound since her accident, is so excited by recent developments that she’s decided to take on a challenge that even most able-bodied people would balk at — a 26-mile marathon. The ReWalk suit, described as a powered exoskeleton that provides user-initiated mobility, will help Lomas complete the course, taking place in London on April 22. Her immediate challenge is learning [...]
